The Lessons of Shaykh Nūḥ

كنت سألت الشيخ " شعيب الأرناؤوط " وأفاد أنه كان يتردَّد على الشيخ نوح في الفقه وغيره ، وما كان الشيخ ناصر الدين الألباني يحضر هذه المجالس ؟

I had asked Shaykh Shuʿayb al-Arnaʾūṭ, and he mentioned that he used to attend the lessons of Shaykh Nūḥ in fiqh and other subjects. So was Shaykh Nāṣir ad-Dīn al-Albānī not present in those gatherings?

الحويني : هنا الشيخ شعيب الأرناؤوط كنت سألته على بعض أشياء ، فتطرَّق الأمر إلى أنه قال : أنُّو أنا كنت أتردَّد على الشيخ نوح في الفقه وكذا ، وما كان الشيخ ناصر يحضر في مجالسنا ؟

Al-Ḥuwaynī: Here, I had asked ash-shaykh Shuʿayb al-Arnaʾūṭ about some matters, and the discussion led to him saying: "I used to attend ash-shaykh Nūḥ [al-Albānī's father] in fiqh and such things, but ash-haykh Nāṣir was not present in our gatherings".

الشيخ : إي أنا ما كنت أحضر هذه الدروس التي هو يعنيها ، لكن نحن كان عندنا درس خاص عند الوالد مع اثنين من الشباب شباب الأرناؤوط ، أحدهما اسمه عبد الرحيم زين العابدين ، ولا يزال في قيد الحياة ، والآخر تُوفي ، وكنا نقرأ عليه " القدوري " في الفقه الحنفي ، كذلك قرأنا عليه " المراح في علم الصرف " ، وختمنا عليه القرآن ،

The shaykh: Yes, I was not attending the lessons he is referring to. But we had our own private lessons with my father, together with two young Arnaʾūṭ men. One of them was named ʿAbd ar-Raḥīm Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn, and he is still alive, while the other passed away. We used to read with him al-Qudūrī in Ḥanafī fiqh. We also read with him al-Marāḥ fī ʿIlm aṣ-Ṣarf, and we completed the Qurʾān with him.

هذا لا يعني أننا ما قرأنا عليه لأني ما كنت أحضر في الوقت الذي كان هو يحضر ؛ كما أن العكس - أيضًا - غير لازم ، لأنه ما كان يحضر دروسنا هذه الخاصة مع الوالد ؛ أنُّو هو ما حضر على الوالد ، هذا ليس بلازم - أيضًا - .

This does not mean that we did not study with him simply because I was not attending at the time when he was attending. And the reverse is not necessarily true either. Just because he was not attending our private lessons with my father does not mean that he did not study with my father either. That is not necessarily the case.

Why Al-Albānī Spoke to People Like They Were His Peers

One of the beautiful things you notice when listening to al-Albānī's recorded discussions is that he did not speak to people as if they were furniture in the room. He spoke to them. A beginner, a student, a confused objector, a man repeating what he heard somewhere, even someone nervous and clearly out of his depth. He still gave him his mind. You can feel it in the tapes. The question comes. Then the answer begins. Then an objection interrupts him. Then, "Allāh yahdīk". Then a pause. Maybe some tea. Then he returns to the first principle calmly, as if nothing disturbed the road, and patiently rebuilds it under the man's feet. Sometimes you hear laughter. Sometimes you feel the tension.
